PC Problems
« on: 22 June 2008, 08:40:35 pm »

Okay, so i have a new computer now and it is blue screenings quite often coming up with NV4_disp

The problem seems to be a driver problem with the Nvidia Geforce 8800 512mb graphics card

Im running XP Pro
2gb ram
2.6g duo core processor
Mobo - Gigabyte Intel P31-DS3L

So far i have unistalled the drivers, even in safe mode using driver cleaner pro and reinstalled the up to date driver.
I have also tried installing older drivers incase the current one was unstable with no success.
Other tried and failed ideas have been to reinstall windows and the drivers from scratch
Update the bios
Update the motherboard drivers
Run stability checks
Check to see if it is an overheating problem, which it is not, runs at a cool 31 C

I have now run out of ideas. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Could also try posting over there as without seeing it I'm running out of ideas :(

Last night i came up with an idea, which im not sure would work. So anyway, here is the idea. Download all the latest drivers i need and save onto a usb stick. Format and reinstall windows then only load up the drivers from the usb ignoring the disc which came with the mobo. By doing this i can hopefully rule out conflicting driver versions, what do people think before i spend all night doing this?

wait!!!!!!! dont format.

Download Driver Cleaner and run it against your vga card.

You should always use this when reinstalling gfx cards as it removes every last scrap of crap that gets installed with a gfx driver.

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745

then reboot and install the new drivers you have.

found that when i went to turn off my pc i had 98 updates to do (turn off ones not restarts) which i never noticed before cos my pc always crashed and i never turned it off. I've been turning off and on my pc and installing these updates for about 3 1/2 hours so far and it looks like i can use the internet without crashing now which is always nice. Still got loads to go though :( but it seems to help, so yay  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sounds good :)

Although once it's done that check with the graphics stress test first, they (in theory) use pure directX to do the graphics so you'll get a cleaner result.

Edit - one other thing, sis you decide to go fancy and hook up two monitors?

not yet, i need either a) a dci to vga converter plug for my old monitor or b) a bigger desk to fit a 2nd 22" windscreen monitor without taking off my tower of gaming/film watching devices.

Just means it's my turn next time  ;D

And Jimmy, it was just to check (although dual monitors are sweet). There's a known, fixable issue, with a standard dual screen setup.

Ah changed that anyway from one of the links you sent me at the beginning, found out a way to solve it, or so someone says. I need to change something in the system tray

Quote "Note: I found out if you disable the stupid little icon on your system tray in services.msc then the error goes away and never returns. "

Quick way - Right click the little green icon next to the clock (it will tool tip as Nvidia something) and click exit. You'll have to do this every time you start the PC up

Better way - Run Hijack this and tick everything in the log that's labelled Nvidia, also nwiz.exe, click "Fix checked" and yes through the rest. Reboot

Well after what seemed like 100 failed attempts i finally formatted and reinstalled windows, installed the latest chip set for my mobo, updated my bios, upgraded the audio set and the latest driver for my graphics card, no crashes yet. I then installed IE7 which was very weird because after the reboot my pc could not find the hard drive, though the boot cd seemed to solve that problem.

The reinstall seems to have solved the crashing however i do keep on locking up and get no response, especially when i launch the cox updater, any ideas about this? Once again, when idle it seems to be fine.

*note :- After the screen saver comes up, and you wake it up from sleeping, i still get black all around the screen apart from around the icons and the task bar, how bizarre!
