Talents and allocation of points?
« on: 8 July 2008, 10:34:31 am »
Before someone says "not him again" yes and sorry I like posing ;D

As the title says Talent points (I know I have none at this moment).

My first question is when you hit level 70 do you stop earning talent points?

Secondly is there a correct path to follow when playing a rouge that these rare points should be added to?Ie The Combat Tree or the other trees?

At this moment in time I have spread them about and now having spnt time looking at other poeples stats Im not sure if thats the right thing to do.

Thanks everyone and yes there will be more posts.

Posing eh!!!

yes when you get to 70 you stop earning Points.

when leveling there is no "Correct" allocation of points, as this depends on your playing style, however there are allocations better than others.

remember you can always re do your talents if you feel that you want to change, this will cost up to 50g depending on how many times you want to respec.

when lvling you want to look at you want to balance dmg output with survivability.

im not the best person with rogues, i always look at www.wowwiki.com for suggestions.

I personally dont like telling people that their talent points are wrong as this is your choice and whatever suits you is always best.

I echo Ashes remarks regarding wowiki as the best source for guidance.
If you do a general web search on how to allocate your talents you will find all sorts of uniformed debate about these things. It's impossible to tell what is good or not.

The other thing is decide how you want to play your rogue. Whether you want some PVP (battlegrounds etc) or more instance action etc. Funnilly enough I was listening to a Podcast on this the other day and they said that Rogues are probably the only character where chosing one talent tree over another will not force you into any other playing style as they are all primarilly around DPS.

You can of course ask Zelander/Zelsco ie "Zel" who (I think) is class leader on rogues who can, I'm sure, give some handy hints.

All I know is that, on the PVP server, we hate 'em - especially gnome ones!!

Zel in amsterdam at the mo so you won't see him online a lot/at all. Everyone is saying wowwiki which is good for boss tactics but I would suggest checking your class forums on the official site (at the top of all classes there is a sticky entitled "useful links") and if you are in to your theorycrafting and optimal spell rotations, optimising characters etc, the place to head for is elitist jerks (google it) and head for class mechanics, to date I have not found a better place to search if you are trying to get the most out of your character

Wow all this activity on the boards!

Although I haven't played for a while, my advice would be to just play for a bit. Wait till you've got the hang of the class and the game before you start to deconstruct the numbers, they make a lot more sense that way.

It'll also mean you won't look like some adolescent Min\Maxer who copies formulae off the boards but doesn't know how to get the most of a tweaked or specialised build ;)
When eyeing a large and dangerous mob...
...A Tanker says, "Stay here while I distract them with my rock hard (granite) body."
...A Brute says, "Stay here while I let them kill me so I can kill them faster!"
...A Scrapper says, "Stay here while I.....ya know what, screw it---CHARGE!11!!1!!11!!1!!

Ok so the general feeling is whatever you do is neither right nor wrong.

I reference to Marks post about Battlegrounds or Instances I want to be able to do both but only having experienced instances I really enjoyed that and I like the fact that you get Loot.

That being the case would it make a difference on the talent tree in your opinion?

the main difference is that some talents are blatentley pvp oriented and not pve mainly things like increased run speed and stun resist etc.

we suggest wowiki as a base : http://www.wowwiki.com/Rogue_builds

this will give you general info about how you spec a rogue.

Mags is ofc right about cheking the class forums as these are the guys that actually apply the talents. But this will only be for when you understand how to play your char, as naam said its better to learn your toon first.

Re battlegrounds or Instance speccing. I'd spec for instances rather than PVP on that particular server. Just my opinion but I think at 70 there is still a process of some more grinding and getting better gear to be done. Instancing is the best way of doing this. In the battlegrounds you can die a lot and still get the same rewards. KOM is very instance focused and despite the helpfullness of fellow guildies I'm sure you'd still like to pack a punch (or knife) on the shop floor.

I personally don't follow the premise that whatever you do is generally the right thing. Sorry it might have been me that implied that. PVP and PVE in WoW are radically different and quite polarised. For example 61 out of the top PVP guild in the USA have never run Karazahn (thanks 'nother podcast!) and get all thier gear from BG rewards. You can do both especially as a rogue but I'd start with a spec that you feel is most focused around damage over defence (by defence I mean PVP defence as Hurc refers to). Right now it's looking for whatever increases those melee numbers.

The other thought that occurs to me in my tiny brain is - I speak (type) as a person who got bored of their first level 70 and realised very late in the day that I had a preference for spellcasting over, in this case, a hunter. So also bear in mind that this could be a bit of a testing ground.

Mags also mentioned elitist jerks which is an exemplary site for optimising.
