Tesla coils where built to investigate and demonstrate high voltages, they don't serve much of a practical purpose in the real world. Techies like building them because they look impressive and are stupidly dangerous then these guys found a way to "tune" the electrical discharge - they then played the Jaws theme (you should also be able to find the Mario theme in the sidebar)

If you wish to file it then put it under "techies, too much time, 101 ways to kill yourself" :)
