Forlorn Hope

Hey all. You've probably noticed nobody is dying as much as usual recently and wondering why - the reason is I haven't been around. I recently went off to Kent Uni and it turns out the network has a firewall that blocks CoH (and every other online game I have).
So I unsubscribed. But I imagine I'll be back during holidays when I'm at home. Let me know if you have any ideas on getting around the firewall though.
See you around, guys!

Awe mate, haven't you seen the movie "The Firm"? Nobody leaves the Firm, in the same way that nobody leaves the supergroup...or CoH for that matter ::)
So as I see it you have two choices. First, you travel back home daily, or to a place that allows unlimited internet access...daily. Alternatively (and dare I say, perhaps shortening your lifespan a tad) you continue to stay at Kent Uni, whinge about girly firewalls, whilst we (the SG) arrange for you and "the boys" to meet in a dark alley :P
Seriously though, would certainly recommend the first course of action ;D
I'll have a word with my mate, who's a bit of a firewall geek. Lets hope someone can fix / break / even steal the firewall in Kent Uni to allow THE Awesomniac his rightful chance to compete again ;)
-
Does this mean Skarlet has to start dying again?
Hmmm, how can I beef up my firewall...?
-
So which campus you on Awe? There's a fair to middling chance you're close to one of two SG members ;)

Cantebury campus.

That's reasonably near Joolz then :D Have to arrange an evening and find some of the backwater pubs that the place is littered with

Any update on that?
I miss my online gaming. :P

Hey ZM - would something like Proxy Tunnel work for this?
-
If there's web browsing working, it might do.... Would need to suss out a config for the game(s) concerned and what the proxy is.... Worth looking into.....
-
Sounds interesting...my msn is
ku -tod- oc -tod- liamtoh -ta- nosnigwad
backwards. (That should stop the spam bots)
I have no idea what I'm doing with proxy tunnelling so if you could tell me about it that'd be good.
-
Proxy tunneling (from my limited understanding of it) means all your web traffic gets routed through another server (proxy) that is regarded as "safe" by your firewall, at that point as far as anything on the other end is concerned everthing comes from that.
Depending what part of the traffic from CoH is being blocked by the Firewall it may or may not work for the game :)
I'll foward you and Joolz copy of the program, he can show it to his Guru and you can have a poke as well. Doing a quick Google produces these (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Free+proxy+lists%22) pages which are all handy
This is where you want to point it to for the Updater software cohupdate.coh.com, I don't know where it goes after that though :(. If it's just the updater that's causing issues then To bypass the updater, build a shortcut to the COH exe file, and add this to its Target
-project "coh"
and you'll have to beg a decent connection when it's patched.
Edited to add.....
Couldn't send you the proggie - Gmail seems to hate exe files. I've asked ZM nicely if he could host it here for a bit and PM you both a link to download :)

Yeah came across the dreaded gmail exe hatred before at work.....
Done.... Hosted and PM'd..... OOOOooooooo.... just noticed I'm using over 400MB space of the package hosting the forlorn-hope (and some of my own) stuff, and total nearly 36 GB of traffic this year so far..... Announcing the mirror of the "thank you" vid on the CoH boards does that you know....

Got the proggy, now have no idea what I'm doing...
Running the program needs a proxy and port to connect to, and the thing that confuses me: a destination proxy and port. What the heck is that?
-
Destination proxy = The computer that pretends to be you. try a search like this http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Free+proxy+lists%22 to find some sites
Port = Their open port, normally 80 or 8080. Does depend what's being blocked.
Does it update OK or does it cack out whwn you try to play?
-
So basically I need to enter two proxies? One to connect to and one for the destination?
-
It's one proxy and the port that it has open (availible from the google list)
and
Destination computer address and the port you want to connect to.
I have no idea what these settings are for CoH :( but that's why ZM has a copy (beats working) and Joolz has one as well (he's got a mate who's shit hot with networking :)
Are you able to find out what ports the Uni block? Quite often only one or two will be affected and knowing them could make the job easier
-
Re ports required, this is from their knowledge base...
What ports are required for City of Heroes? I can't log in or patch the game.
City of Heroes requires the following ports to be open: TCP: 6994, 2104, 2106 and UDP: 7000-7100. You will need to check with the network administrator for your network to see if these ports are blocked, and if so, if they can be opened. We tend to get a lot of questions about connection problems with college networks and this is usually the cause of the problem. If you are at home, then the issue is probably caused by a router, proxy, or security software you may have installed. Configure any security software that may be running. If you have allowed the cohupdater.exe and/or cityofheroes.exe applications in the past, double check the security software settings because often times they will block City of Heroes after it has patched.
If you do have a router, you can try opening the ports above on the router to see if that has any effect. The best way to narrow the issue to the router is by removing it and trying to connect. If you can connect to the game while directly connected to your Internet connection then either the ports on the router need to be opened or you have an issue with the router. If you are not sure if you have a router or not please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or the person who set up your internet connection.

I think we should hand Zombieman the title of Hacker in Chief. Damn the dude's clever.
From now on, every time I communicate with Zombieman I'm gonna bounce my connection off of 14 countries, two continents and the local McDonalds. Trace that clever clogs ;D

Hang on...... *buzz* *whirr* *click* So you posting from home today? Nildram ADSL by any chance ;D ;D
P.S. Check this out...... clickee (http://www.ripe.net/perl/whois?searchtext=129.12.0.0)

Still confused.
I get the proxy and port, but I'm still confused as to what I'm supposed to be entering for the destination stuff. Is that my own IP? Or what?
No idea what ports the uni blocks.
-
Errmmm...... you know, looking at what Naaman gave me to forward, think he *MIGHT* have given the wrong proxytunnel??? He included games.ini which is from the "proxytunnel" program he used for EnB.... soooooo........
Try grabbing download from here
http://www.wimvds.be/en/downloads.html
Then add the following to the games.ini file
Game7=City of Heroes
Server7=cohupdate.coh.com
Game8=City of Villains
Server8=update.cityofvillains.com
If ya lucky, then all you need to do is type in the address and port of a proxy found by Google (see Naam's posts), select a game from the drop down and click start.... IIRC seeing a window with "junk" in it is normal...
If ya not lucky, then maybe the "dodgy command line version" can be persuaded to do something... don't know anything about that one... Except it does probably need the cygwin1.dll which Naam also provided, which the other proxytunnel program doesn't need... Hmmmm... I think I'm confused now...
P.S. As far as I can tell from DNS the only names used are for the update servers and the web servers used to supply info shown in the updater window. Guessing everything else is done via IP so could be anything...
