Want a hand with it?

Yes.

My guess is that either the BIOS needs upgrading or the memory settings need changing,
and I don't really fancy doing either.

Heh - understandable. I'll see what time I'm home tonight, if not it'll be the weekend :(
What PC did you get?  I can read up on it before I play...

one like this
http://www.evesham.com/PCs/Info.asp?e=4562EF88-9041-4769-90D1-A5C8C2D04C20

but with the FX-57 CPU and 2GB RAM.

yes I've got more money than sense, yes it is dangerous being bored at work and browsing PC vendors.

Ooohhhh  ;D
Right off the top of my head the Soundcard looks to be a primary culprit, the boards are full of people having problems with Audigys...

I ran a stress test thingy call prime95, which failed after a mintue or two.
Thats a prime number generator that doesn't use any sound or graphics,
so unless the soundcard is interfering with like everything I doubt thats the main problem.
It may of course be problematic as well.

Message to JohnO's PC:

GET WELL SOON

It was overheating, sort of.

Has a temperature gauge on the front of the box which is totally wrong.
Used PC Wizard to look at the CPU state and when it hit about 50 degrees bad
things would happen.  The voltage it was sending to the CPU seemed very low
(1.3v ,chip is specced for 1.4v) so it seemed that was insuffient when the resistance
went up with increased temperature.
So anyway I turned up all the fans and that made very little difference, then increased
the voltage to the CPU by 3% and that meant I could run CoH and FM fine, but
prime95 still fails after 6 minutes.

Did you call Evesham up and complain? It should still be able to run Prime95 for as long as you want it to...?

You might also want to take a quick look at a program called SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to see how many temp sensors it can read.

P.S. CPU temp of 50 degrees shouldn't cause any problems, but if HDD temp gets up to that sort of temperature it has a knack of causing problems including random freezes, in my experience anyway...

Hope you get it totally sorted soon.

FFS! Thats a heeluva lot of cash to spend on a PC! Very impressive though!

Can I have yer old one? It'd still be five times better than mine!

p.s. I might need a hand with a tricky DVD dribe problem on Ian's latest PC, it seems to be a bit 'quirky' so have disabled it temporarily.

By the Way John, have you considered water cooling systems? Ianm picked up a bargain on eBay and got a super silent Zalman Reserator PC.

http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=160&code=021

You can get a water cooled CPU, graphics card and power supply for approx 300-350 new

and Ian's now runs at a max of 34 degrees when Warcrafting

Nice - but I've never really liked water cooling unless you have a machine that really needs it and I'm not a quiet freak or a OC'er.

I'm starting to become a quiet freak, sometimes the noise gets right at me

I work with loud weaponry, so for me, silent is a bad thing.

Hence why my laptop is the size of a base unit with a 15" wide screen.

It heats my room during the winter.

Oh - While I remember (beer and all ::)) It's a good idea to whack a couple of low noise fans in the front and an exhaust fan, the Hard Drives still get bloody hot and need a little cooling
